Your Child's First Gymnastics Class in Wilmington, OH
Your child's first gymnastics class in Wilmington, OH: which class fits each age, what to wear, what happens in class, and how sign-up works.
Signing your kid up for a first gymnastics class is exciting, and it usually comes with a few questions. Which class? What do they wear? Do you stay? Here's what a first class at The Flip Zone looks like, from the gym on Park Drive in Wilmington.
What age can my child start gymnastics in Wilmington?
Children can start at The Flip Zone at age 2 in Mini and Me, where a parent joins them on the floor. From age 3 they take preschool class on their own. School age tumbling runs from 5 to 12 in four skill levels, teens have their own classes, and All Star cheer takes athletes from age 4.
Which class fits your child?
We sort kids by age first, then by skill. Here's where most families start:
- Age 2: Mini and Me. You're on the floor with your child for the whole class.
- Ages 3 to 5: preschool class, on their own. There are daytime homeschool classes too.
- Ages 5 to 12: school age tumbling, in four levels from cartwheels to back handsprings.
- Middle and high school: teen tumbling, whether they're brand new or already tumbling.
- Ages 4 and up who want to compete: All Star cheer, with stunts, tumbling and routines.
What happens in a first preschool class?
Preschool class runs about 45 minutes. Kids warm up with music and stretching, then move through games, mats and obstacle courses. Coaches teach rolls, jumps, balance and body awareness, and to your child it just feels like play. That's on purpose. Little ones build coordination and strength fastest when they're having fun.
One of our parents put it this way: "There is no child that the owner, Sheri, can't get to safely participate and love the class."
How do school age levels work?
For ages 5 to 12, we place kids by skill, not age. That keeps everyone safe, and it means your child is never pushed into a skill before they're ready.
- Level 1: start here. For anyone still working toward a back handspring.
- Level 2: needs a cartwheel and a bridge kickover on a mat.
- Level 3: needs a backbend kickover.
- Level 4: needs a back handspring, or the instructor's okay.
Most kids who've never tumbled start in Level 1, and they move up when they're ready. Not sure? Call us and we'll help place them.
What should my child wear to a first gymnastics class?
A leotard, or a fitted t-shirt with shorts or leggings. Skip loose clothes and jewelry, and tie long hair back. Everyone tumbles barefoot, so no shoes or socks.
Where do parents go during class?
In Mini and Me, you're right there on the floor with your two-year-old. From age 3, kids take class on their own while parents watch from the lobby. Coaches spot every step and never rush a skill, so you can relax and watch.
How do sign-up and tuition work?
You sign up online through our class schedule. Hit See Class Times, pick a class with open spots, and register. Your child can start that same week. You don't need to wait for a new session.
Tuition is monthly and based on four classes a month. When a month has five, the total adjusts to cover the extra class. If you join partway through a month, you only pay for the classes that are left. Once you're registered, the Parent Portal is where you manage your account.
Is it ever too late to start?
No. Teens often pick up tumbling quickly because they have the strength and focus for it, and our coaches start from wherever your child is. If they cheer for their school, our teen classes are a great way to get ready for tryouts.
